Timing Gear

Examination of the primary timing chain indicates that it is in quite good condition and that there were 'blue' link plates, the chain must have been changed at some previous time. (the improved version, although still sub-standard ).

The only sprocket that shows any significant wear is the crank sprocket.

Note that the front cover has been removed without taking off the head, the left hand guid rail can also be removed at this point.                                                       Secondary chain tensioner has been removed.

The left hand guide rail showed signs of wear. There were cracks in the plastic and pitting in the lower part. It did not have much life left. When the rail eventually breaks the chain flaps about and tries to jump teeth on the spockets, this in turn leads to the chain snapping, causing lots of other damage.
