Examination of the head gasket revealed that No2 was not the only place that had blown.                                               

Below is new 'v' old, notice the extra holes in the old one that should not be there, courtisy of Ian Marsh.

        Metal ring had laminated (No2)

       Gasket material has been eaten away by anti-freeze coolant / steam. Suspect head will have some damage aswell.
